Milk Thistle & Treefort!

Writer: The Vervain Collective The Vervain Collective

Spring is nigh!

We absolutely love when the calendar turns to March. Treefort and #Teafort are on the horizon and our bodies are ready to move beyond the stagnation of winter. Read on to learn about one of the plant friends we'll be turning to for liver support all month and during the week of Treefort shenanigans!

Herb of the Month - Milk Thistle

Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum)

Milk Thistle is native to the Mediterranean but has naturalized throughout Europe and in western U.S. Many states include them in their invasive species list as they grow quite readily in open spaces and self-seed easily.

This plant ally is remarkable in its ability to protect the liver from damage and help renew liver cells. Other known benefits are helping people with depression and melancholy, which can often be attributed to liver deficiencies. Traditionally, the flower heads were eaten like artichokes and made into tonics. The seeds are currently  the most commonly used part of this plant when making medicinal preparations such as tinctures,  capsules, and decoctions.

Milk Thistle's key constituents are the flavonlignans known collectively as silymarin, bitter principles, and polyacetylenes. Together, these constituents create the key actions of liver protective and chemoprotective. Decades of laboratory research confirm this special plant helps people treat liver diseases such as hepatitis and cirrhosis and supporting the liver while going through chemotherapy.

Could your liver benefit from a relationship with milk thistle?
