Writer's picture: The Vervain Collective The Vervain Collective

Kava (Piper methysticum)

Kava is an evergreen, viney shrub that can climb up to 10 feet tall with huge tapering leaves that can grow 10 inches across! It is indigenous to Polynesia and throughout the Pacific Islands and holds major ritual and cultural significance for the peoples of those regions.

Traditionally, the root was chewed and fermented with saliva but common practices include using the root for water infusions and alcohol extracts (tinctures). Kava's main constituents are resins that contain kava lactones and piperidine alkaloids. Humans enjoy this plant ally for its calming and euphoria-inducing and heart-opening effects. Many have found relief from anxiety, pain, and conditions like arthritis and urinary tract issues. It can help with sleep, libido, socializing, and spiritual connections. This precious plant is highly revered and gaining more appreciation by people looking to expand beyond the use of alcohol for such desired states.

You can find kava in many incredible products at The Vervain Collective, as well as in bulk herb and tincture forms. Here are some of our favorite items at the shop:
